Worried about what other people would think of me, I hesitated before clicking the hot pink “Sign Up Now!” button for my first pole dancing class. The stigma surrounding the pole was the only thing holding me back: isn’t pole dancing for strippers?
I was a little nervous about what my friends would think, nonetheless I confessed to my best friend, “You’re never going to believe what I just registered for... a pole dancing class.” I signed up because I wanted to try something new that would boost my confidence and motivate me to get back into a regular fitness routine. The health benefits of pole fitness would be a fantastic bonus.
My best friend’s response shocked me. “No way! I’ve always wanted to try a pole dancing class. Can I come?!” Whew… what a relief! I wouldn’t be in it alone.
But, it made me think: who else was holding back from the pole because they were scared of the stereotype?

- Sign Up for You – Everyone has their own reasons for participating in pole classes. Make reaching your personal goals a priority and don’t worry about what other people think. You’ll meet like-minded people and become of a part of a fun and health-conscious community.
- Bring A Friend – A workout buddy can be the best thing to keep you on track and help you reach your fitness goals. When it comes to the pole fitness trend, trust me, you’re not the only one who has thought about it.
- Don’t be shy – Be fierce. Be fearless. Embrace stereotypes.
After signing up, I was welcomed to the Tantra community with an email encouraging me to come in, ask questions, and enjoy!
One of the things I loved about Tantra was that the focus was on fitness, but they are also very supportive of the more risqué styles of pole dance. In fact, they offer exotic dancing classes that are very popular. The beginner classes are all focused on fitness and building strength that can later be applied to other styles like exotic dance, lyrical pole, or pole acrobatics.
Pole workouts should be seen as an exciting experience and a challenging fitness routine that engages you with a community of strong individuals. Now I’m wondering… isn’t pole dancing for everyone?
